On an uncharacteristically hot and sunny Hewitt opening day in April, we drew Glenalmond in the first round playing at Royal St George’s. Glenalmond was a stronger team than had been envisaged and as a result our ten man team of Waud and Huxford, White and Taggart, Atkins and Turrell, Fairfax and Collard and Burstow and Ogden lost 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 despite a fine win from Paul Turrell and George Atkins and a halved match from Harry Taggart and Joe White. It was Jeremy Waud’s 45 Hewitt match, an incredible achievement. Rossall was the eventual winner of the Hewitt.
In the Hewitt Plate, played at Prince’s with a 6 man team on the Friday morning, we beat Chigwell 2/1 in the opening round, going on to loose to Framlingham the next day in the second round.
Our pairing of Harry Taggart and Joe White were undefeated over the three days, winning both their Plate matches and halving their match in the Hewitt itself and were nominated as our Hewitt Award winners for 2026, for the best team performance over the Hewitt days. Radley was the eventual winner of the Plate.
It was a great four days golf, with a pre Hewitt dinner and AGM in the clubhouse at Royal Cinque Ports and a pre dinner wine tasting the next evening. Sadly several of our key players were not available for selection this year and our first round defeat emphasised the fact that we always need to be at full strength as most schools are now fielding an all scratch team and better.
